We chose Swissôtel for our honeymoon and were disappointed that several issues significantly impacted our experience. Summary of issues: 1. Initial room condition and downgrade We arrived at approximately 1:00am to find our assigned room, on an elevated floor with a city view, had a strong cigarette smoke odor. As non-smokers, the room was unusable. Front desk staff were accommodating and moved us, but the replacement room was on a lower floor with a significantly less desirable view. The next day we were moved again to a slightly better room than the night before, but still on the same lower floor. 2. Incorrect compensation gesture We appreciated that a small cake was provided as a gesture of goodwill, considering we were not able to eat our initial gold welcome rewards treat placed in our first room. However, it was labeled “Happy Anniversary” despite us having clearly stated at check-in that we were celebrating our honeymoon. This felt inattentive and diminished the gesture. However, we did really appreciate access to the executive lounge. 3. Rooftop bar access denied with no prior notice. On our final evening we planned to use our complimentary drinks voucher via the Accor app to watch the sunset from the rooftop bar. Upon arrival, we were told the entire bar was booked for a private function. We received no prior warning about this closure. This was a key moment we had looked forward to as part of our honeymoon. 4. Overall atmosphere and lack of communication. Throughout our stay, the hotel was hosting the Belgian Economic Mission conference. There was a heavy police and security presence, and we often felt uncomfortable and secondary to the “VIP” guests. Staff attention was clearly focused elsewhere, and again, no prior notice was given that this event would impact the guest experience. We understand that events and room issues can occur, but the combination of these factors meant our honeymoon did not meet the standard we expected from Swissôtel. We chose your property for its reputation and location, and the lack of communication and attention to detail was disappointing. Thank you for taking the time to review our concerns. This is our 7th consecutive stay at the Swissotel, and each time we've felt that it's the people who make the experience pleasant. This is not to minimise the other factors, like spacious rooms, very convenient location. It is just the warm feeling you get as soon as you enter the lobby surrounded by smiley faces, helpful reception desk people and bellmen who chat you up (shout out to Gorkem). The lounge is very nice, the breakfast excellent (and again the people make the difference)
