Upon arrival, hotel staff advised that an upgraded room was available for an additional charge of $1,200 per night for a track-view room or $400 per night for a partial-view room. However, no complimentary room upgrade was offered. When I enquired about this, I was informed that complimentary upgrades are not available during the Formula 1 weekend. This was particularly disappointing given that I booked nearly 12 months in advance, paid for the stay in advance, and specifically noted on my reservation that I would appreciate a room upgrade if one was available. Learning at check-in that upgraded rooms were available, but only at an additional cost, made us feel that the hotel's approach lacked transparency and was inconsistent with the expectations associated with our membership benefits. I have since reviewed bookings for next year's Formula 1 event and noted that there is still no disclosure within the Accor booking platform, booking terms and conditions, or published blackout dates indicating that complimentary room upgrades are unavailable during this period. While I appreciate that the hotel may choose to modify or restrict benefits during major events, any departure from standard membership benefits should be clearly disclosed at the time of booking so that guests can make informed decisions. Further to this, a friend of mine stayed at the hotel during the same period, booked the same room category, and was offered an upgrade for $500 per night. They were already accommodated in a superior room (Despite booking the same room) with a track view and also hold a lower Accor membership status than we do. To then be quoted significantly higher upgrade prices made the process appear inconsistent and gave us little confidence that upgrade offers were being applied honestly, fairly or transparently. In summary, one of the primary reasons I chose this hotel was to receive the benefits associated with my Accor membership. When those benefits are unavailable, or when the circumstances in which they are unavailable are not clearly communicated during the booking process, it becomes difficult to justify choosing this hotel over alternative accommodation options in the future. I hope Accor and the hotel management will review both the communication of membership benefits during major events and the consistency of their upgrade practices to ensure guests can make informed booking decisions and maintain confidence in the value of the loyalty program.
