SOS By The Numbers

An estimated 143 to 210 million children worldwide have lost one or both of their parents; one billion children live in regions affected by war.

Commitment to community has been the cornerstone of Swissotel’s business philosophy. Wherever we are, we work tirelessly to enhance not only our local communities, but remote communities in need of aid due to war, poverty, famine or disease. We actively support charities and nonprofit organizations involved in aiding underprivileged children around the world, and we nurture this spirit among our colleagues. Our 15-year partnership with SOS Children’s Villages is particularly dear to our hearts.

SOS Children's Villages is a global nonprofit that works to protect and care for vulnerable orphaned and abandoned children, creating stable families around the globe to provide the love, care and education they need. The charity works intimately with struggling families to help prevent child abandonment before it happens. With a unique model of providing long-term, family-based care for children who have lost parental care, SOS Children's Villages is making an impact. Even with a global focus, every child has an individual development plan. Recent results include:

  • 56% of families who participated in SOS family-strengthening programs in 2013 attained self-sufficiency.
  • At last count, 164,000 children and young people were enrolled in SOS Children’s Villages kindergartens, schools and vocational training centers.
  • The educational performance of 76% of children in an SOS program either stabilizes or improves after one year.
  • SOS medical centres around the world provide 857,000 treatments to children and adults in a single year. In many rural areas served by SOS, it is the only provider available for critical, life-saving medical services.
  • 22% of children exhibit “significant health improvements” after one year of participating in an SOS program.

In 2014, Swissotel Hotels and Resorts is involved in numerous initiatives benefitting children in villages across India. This includes coming together with committed donors to host "An Evening for India" at Swissotel Zurich, with Swiss Talkmaster Kurt Aeschbacher welcoming more than 200 guests to present stories about SOS children in India. This single event helped raise more than CHF 30’000 in donations for the cause.

SOS Children’s Villages and Swissotel Hotels & Resorts are making a difference. By engaging with us online, you’ll be helping us contribute an addition CHF 10’000 to this vital work.
