Makkah is the holy city of Saudi Arabia and to the millions of Muslims who visit, entering is the spiritual high point of their lives, an experience that remains indelibly etched in their memories forever. The focal point of Makkah is the Ka'aba, or the House of God, believed by Muslims to have been built by Abraham and his son Ishmael. For Muslims, a pilgrimage to Makkah is required as one of the Five Pillars of Faith. In recent years, about two million Muslims have gathered for the Hajj during the month of Dhu'l-Hijjah.
Muslims also perform the minor pilgrimage or Umrah, which may be undertaken any time of the year. Few non-Muslims have ever seen the rites of the Hajj, as they are strictly prohibited from entering both Makkah and Madinah.
