The fun-filled festival celebrates Thai New Year. Initially a tradition of visiting elders & monks, the modern version includes throwing water, often mixed with chalk, at passersby throughout the country. Beauty pageants and parties are also part of today’s festival.

Royal Ploughing Ceremony

Brahmin priests use sacred oxen to forecast the year’s rainfall and harvest in costumed royal pageantry. Farmers then rush in to gather the blessed seeds. This is usually a holiday only for state workers.

Bangkok city shines on this day, Ratchadamnoen Road is filled with lights and candle-holding crowds gather in the Sanam Luang area to celebrate the Queen’s birthday, which is also known as Mother’s Day.

Loy Krathong

During this festival, Thais crowd waterways to cleanse sins by giving the water spirit a delicate, candlelit Krathong float made from banana tree trunk, leaf, incense and flowers. This is a magical night, with many people gathering around different bodies of water to make their offerings.

King’s Birthday

Thais have great respect and love for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, which is especially evident on his birthday, which is also Father’s Day. The King holds an address at the Royal Plaza in the morning and after dark candles are lit in Sanam Lung, with fireworks, traditional music and dancing.
