< BACK TO OVERVIEW

Begun in post-war Austria by Hermann Gmeiner, SOS Children’s Villages makes a real difference for mothers and children in 134 countries around the world. Each village offers a safe home for those who’ve lost everything to war, civil conflicts or natural disasters. The people behind SOS Children’s Villages understand that it truly does take a village to raise a child; they focus on providing long-term homes to support mothers and their children, as well as kids who have been orphaned, neglected or abandoned.

Recognizing that it's not enough to just provide a bed and meals, SOS Children’s Villages works to strengthen communities through education for youth, support for single parents and accessible health care. When an SOS foster child reaches the age of 18, they are ready to live independent lives as a result of the care and training they received in their SOS Children's Villages home. Nurturing an environment that supports the local culture, encourages social development and provides residents with the skills needed to lead productive lives requires suitable resources and demands support from the world community.

For the past 15 years, Swissotel Hotels & Resorts team members, guests and supporters have contributed to this charity; since 2008, we’ve raised CHF 250'000 for these children. Each year, one country is selected as the recipient for all funds raised by Swissôtel. In 2011, the funds allowed nine teenagers, including Oleg, in Lavrovo, Russia, to finish secondary school, paving the way to college or vocational school.

Three villages in Bawana, Faridabad and Bhimtal, India, are the focus for our 2014 fundraising efforts. With our support, these villages will be better able to help children like Roshni. Left an orphan at age 5 after losing both parents to AIDS, Roshni now has a loving family home at SOS Children's Village Raipur and is receiving an education.
