In 2009, Swissotel Hotels & Resorts marked the 10th anniversary of our partnership with SOS Children’s Villages, an international NGO that offers family-based care programs for orphaned and neglected children, as well as disadvantaged families. Generous Swissotel guests, and a charity auction at Swissotel Metropole Geneva in concert with a retail partner, raised CHF 160’000 for the organisation by dropping loose change into coin collection boxes at each hotel. Millions of children across the globe lack a caring family environment due to war, disease, poverty and natural disasters. These donations help ensure these vulnerable children are protected and provided with loving families, education and healthcare. As a result, they not only survive but thrive, growing up to become self-sufficient adults.

In 2009, donations helped support 2,018 SOS facilities and programs, benefitting more than one million children and adults. Notable achievements included:

  • Opening the 500th SOS Children’s Village in Cali, Columbia, now home to more than 120 children.
  • Opening SOS Children’s Village Phuket in Thailand with funds to cover operational costs for the following decade.
  • Rebuilding a school now attended by 1,500 pupils in tsunami-devastated Kalmunai, Sri Lanka.
  • Providing psycho-social therapy to traumatized refugee children of Darfur.

In addition, the UN General Assembly established the “Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children,” guaranteeing children are only removed from their families as a last resort. The resolution protects mothers like 33-year-old Aziza from Cairo, Egypt. She lost her home and income after her husband’s death, but through an SOS Family Strengthening Program she was able to keep her family intact. Her three children attended school instead of being forced into child labor. And Aziza received training to start a micro business to provide long-term support for her family. In 2009, SOS Children’s Villages also launched its "I Matter" campaign, which helps young adults transition out of the program to become productive, engaged members of society.

SOS Children’s Villages’ programs are invaluable for helping at-risk children. But these endeavors are only possible through the support of individuals like you. Please join us, and SOS Children’s Villages, as we strive to provide a safe, loving family for every child in need.
