Destination Overview

Ankara is the capital of Turkey. Nearby attractions include Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Turkey. This museum features a wax statue of Atatürk, and houses a large collection of his books, paintings and other personal items.

The Ankara Citadel was constructed by the Celts in the third century B.C., while the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations displays artefacts from various civilizations starting from the Stone Age until the Roman Period.

Also of interest is the Aslanhane Mosque, constructed in the 13th century and famous for its turquoise tiled mihrab. The 125 metre Atakule tower offers splendid views of Ankara and the Kocatepe Mosque is the largest mosque in Ankara.
