Located in the western region of Saudi Arabia, Makkah is the holiest city on earth to Muslims. It is the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and a pilgrimage to the city is one of the Five Pillars of Islam required of all able adult Muslims at least once in their lifetime.
At the heart of the city is Masjid al-Haram - the largest mosque in the world. The area around the mosque comprises the old city. The main avenues are Al-Mudda'ah and Sûq al-Layl to the north of the mosque, and As-Sûg Assaghûr to the south.
