Bremen is a Hanseatic port city in north-western Germany, situated along the river Weser, 60 kilometres south of the North Sea.

The state of Bremen consists of Bremen and Bremerhaven. Its official name is Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. The Market square, with the magnificent Town Hall and its stone statue of Roland, were both officially added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of Cultural Sites in 2004.

Since 1036 Bremen has hosted the Freimarkt ("Free market") held each year in the last 2 weeks of October. This is one of the world's oldest, longest and in Germany, largest celebrated festivals. Bremen is also famous for the fairy tale “The Bremen Town Musicians"
